The demand for potbelly stoves has always been great. They are actively used for heating houses, baths, greenhouses, cottages. Heating a garage with a potbelly stove is also a fairly popular method of heating. Moreover, such a furnace can be manufactured in the factory or independently, from improvised materials. There are many modifications of this furnace. One of the most effective is a potbelly stove with installed batteries.
Potbelly stove can be quite simply made independently. Used gas cylinders and fire extinguishers, cans, metal barrels are excellent for this purpose. You can weld a potbelly stove from steel sheets. Most often it is rectangular, cylindrical or some other shape.

Attention: The dimensions of the furnace opening depend on the fuel used. If firewood is used, the hole should be wide, but if briquettes or coal are used as fuel, the size of the hole is much smaller. The main thing here is the ability to freely put the used fuel into the furnace.

When using a potbelly stove to heat a garage, it should be remembered that, if used improperly, it can cause a fire. To avoid this, it is required to install it on a steel sheet of the right size or any other coating that is immune to fire and high temperature. The chimney must have a spark arrester.
To achieve better heating of a room, in our case a garage, a potbelly stove can be connected to a water circuit. In this case, it must be additionally equipped with a water tank and pipes. As has been proven in practice, a potbelly stove with batteries allows you to heat the garage much faster and better, even in severe frosts. But in order to make such a heating system, it is necessary to achieve good circulation of water in it.
The water circuit can be installed simultaneously with the potbelly stove or a little later. The circulation of water in the heating system can be forced (using a pump) or natural.
A potbelly stove with a battery has numerous advantages that make it popular for heating garages. Among the advantages, the following can be distinguished:
- Availability of fuel — the potbelly stove is able to work on wood, briquettes, coal, peat, etc. The cost of all these types of fuel is small and they are available to almost everyone.
- Savings — due to the low cost of a potbelly stove with a water circuit compared to other heating systems, it allows you to save a lot, while at the same time making it possible to effectively heat the room.
In addition, since the size of the potbelly stove is small, in the garage you can easily find a place to mount it.
Attention: Potbelly stove, if you make it yourself, and do not buy ready-made, must be made of high quality, durable materials. Steel with a thickness of at least 3 millimeters is best suited for this purpose.
The manufacture of a potbelly stove with a water circuit consists of several stages. The first and very important is the preparation of the drawing. To make it, you first need to decide on the place where the furnace will be installed, take all the necessary measurements and transfer them to the drawing.
Most often, a potbelly stove in the garage is installed on a metal sheet. But in some cases, a foundation can be made for it. This operation is performed in the following order:
- We disassemble the base of the floor and make a rectangular pit with a depth of 40-50 centimeters.
- We fill the bottom of the pit with a layer of sand, small brick chips or rubble.
- Fill the bottom with cement. When performing this procedure, you should check the horizontalness with a level.
- We wait until the cement is completely dry, after which we lay several layers of roofing material. It acts as a waterproofing agent and protects the potbelly stove from moisture that can seep out of the soil.
After the foundation is ready, you can proceed to the next stage — the manufacture of a potbelly stove.

Making a potbelly stove is not at all difficult. Two side and one rear wall should be welded to the bottom of the furnace. At the same time, keep in mind that its lower part should be at a distance of at least 30 centimeters from the floor surface. This can be achieved by welding metal legs to it. Although if the floor is made of non-combustible materials, this condition is not necessary. All structural elements must be connected to each other at an angle of 90 degrees. The connection is made by a welding machine.
Having finished with this, you can proceed to create a partition between the firebox and the blower. It must have a hole for extracting ash. It should be located at a distance of about 5 centimeters from the walls. The size of the blower opening should be 3 centimeters smaller than the size of the blower itself.
Next, you should weld the front of the potbelly stove, in which doorways with canopies should be made in advance. Having finished with this, you can proceed to the installation of the door with a valve.
Having done all of the above, you should carefully inspect all welds.
Attention: If any defects are found, they should be corrected immediately. In the event that everything is in order, you can weld the upper part of the potbelly stove and connect the chimney to it.
In the manufacture of potbelly stoves, sufficient attention should be paid to the water circuit. The main thing in it is the coolant. It must be installed in the furnace furnace, and then connected to the water circuit. Its design can be very different. Usually, a sheet of steel with a thickness of 3-5 millimeters is used for its manufacture. It can also be made from steel hollow pipes. But keep in mind that such steel structures have a small heating area.
The water circuit includes:
- expansion tank;
- steel, cast iron or any other pipes;
From the tools you will need a grinder, a drill, a welding machine and a hammer.
By starting this heating system, the water that will be heated into heat carriers will flow through pipes into batteries installed in the garage. After the water cools down, it will return to the coolant again. This allows you to guarantee high-quality and reliable heating of your garage with your own hands. A potbelly stove with a battery will allow you to heat it even in severe frosts.
Installation of a water heating system
Installation of water circuits does not take much time and effort. Radiators are connected to the potbelly stove with pipes. When connecting them, one should take into account what material they are made of.
Radiators are hung on brackets, after which pipes must be connected to them, which must be located at a distance of 2-5 centimeters from the wall, and 10-15 centimeters from the floor.
Installation is carried out in the following order:
- Mounting brackets are marked on the walls.
- Holes are drilled for them.
- Brackets are fixed on the wall. In this case, verticality must be observed.
- The radiator is assembled and hung with brackets on the wall.
- The inlet and outlet pipes are installed.
At the inlet and outlet, control and shut-off fittings should be installed. The latter is necessary to block the flow of water. It is also recommended to install thermal sensors at the inlet and outlet. An expansion tank must also be installed. It is required in case a sudden boil of water occurs in the system.
After the entire heating system is installed, its performance should be checked.
Attention: In this case, you should carefully monitor the temperature in the potbelly stove and possible leaks.
